The most likely cause of the corrosion, as the article describes, may be microorganisms that thrive in diesel fuel and feed off the hydrocarbons in fuel and water in the fuel which can come from everyday unavoidable events such as humidity and/or condensation in the tank.
This is such a well-known problem that the predominant microbe, a fungus, is not known generally by its scientific name Hormoconis resinae but as ‘Diesel Bug’.
These microorganisms eventually form a biomass then this biomass causes the production of corrosive acids occurs and these acids pit corrodes the metal surfaces of the tank.
