Historically, sediment or particulate control by measurement of total mass or volume has been sufficient to determine fuel cleanliness. However, as fuel injection system pressures and event precision requirements (including timing of injection events and multiple injections per power stroke) have increased, the fuel injection systems have become far more sensitive to particle size and amounts.
